Surry Hills Edwardian Period Home Renovation and Extension - a Heritage Overlay Achievement

The proposed extension to our client's timber Edwardian home (circa 1908) in Surrey Hills is within a Neighbourhood Residential Zone - Schedule 3 (NRZ3) with a Heritage Overlay.  The client's design brief was challenged by an easement running the length of the property, increasing the side and rear setbacks of the proposed  development. In addition, the council's Heritage Architects insisted on the first floor extension being hidden from street view, behind the original roof line, reducing the the size of our already modest first floor. 

Through discussions and on site meetings we were able to demonstrate to the Heritage Architect that our proposed building design was well within ResCode, respected the historical significance of the timber Edwardian house, did not detract from the historical significance of the streetscape and quite simply any proposed first floor would be visible from the street wherever it was situated on the property.
